Wells Fargo application rules: 6-month, 48-month, and the reported 5/24

By John Bourscheid · Updated October 2026 · 11 min read
Quick answer

Wells Fargo’s credit card application rules allow 1 welcome bonus every 6 months across its cards, and a 48 month wait to earn the same card’s bonus again, counted from the day you opened it. The clock starts at opening, not when the bonus posts. Both clocks sit in the issuer rules tracker.

Wells Fargo built a card lineup worth planning around and a set of rules to match. 3 limits matter now: a 6-month wait between bonuses, a 48-month wait to repeat the same card, and a reported 5/24-style screen that the bank has never confirmed.

Everything below was checked against current applicant reports in June 2026. The published terms cover the 6-month and 48-month rules; the velocity screen is inferred from data points. The issuer rules tracker lists all of it next to the other issuers.

Where this comes from. Two of the three rules on this page are published and one is not. Wells Fargo states the 6-month bonus spacing and the 48-month same-card wait in the terms on its card application pages; read the bonus eligibility paragraph on the specific card before you apply, because the wording differs between cards. The 5/24-style velocity screen is observed only. It comes from applicant reports and Wells Fargo has never published it, so treat that number as a tendency. Checked September 2026. Updated October 21, 2026: Wells Fargo Rewards changes as reported by Frequent Miler and Upgraded Points (effective September 25, 2026). Updated October 22, 2026: Choice 15-month and 1-account wording, the credit-line wording, prequalification and the 5 to 7 business day decision window from Wells Fargo pages; Bilt issuer change from bilt.com; status number from Frequent Miler (February 24, 2026).

The 6-month rule

Wells Fargo lets you earn one welcome bonus across its cards every 6 months. The clock is between bonuses, not between applications, so two cards opened a week apart will not both pay if the second falls inside the 6-month window. Plan one Wells Fargo bonus per half-year and you stay clear.

This is gentler than it sounds because the Wells Fargo lineup is small. You are rarely trying to open three of their cards in a quarter. The rule mostly shapes the order in which you pick up the Active Cash, Autograph and Autograph Journey cards.

The 48-month same-card rule

To earn a bonus on a card you have held before, Wells Fargo makes you wait 48 months. This rule was added in August 2024 and, helpfully, the clock starts the day you opened the card rather than the day the bonus posted. If you opened an Active Cash in 2022, you are eligible again in 2026 from the open date.

Four years is long enough that the same-card rule rarely drives a near-term plan, but it matters for anyone cycling back through a lineup they have already worked. Note the open-date start, because it quietly shortens the real wait compared with banks that measure from the bonus.

The reported 5/24 screen

Numerous applicants report being declined by Wells Fargo with more than 5 new personal cards from any issuer in the past 24 months. The pattern looks like a quieter version of Chase 5/24. Wells Fargo has not published it, so treat it as a strong tendency, and plan as though it is real if you are deep into a churning run.

The wrinkle that catches people is authorized users. Unlike Chase, where you can ask reconsideration to ignore AU accounts, Wells Fargo appears to count authorized-user cards and will not strip them on a call. If your number is borderline, count every AU card you hold before you apply.

Exceptions: Signify, Choice and Bilt

3 products sit outside the normal cadence. The Signify Business Cash card behaves differently from the consumer travel and cash lineup, so it neither blocks nor is blocked by the 6-month rule in the usual way. The Choice Privileges cards carry their own wording: no bonus if you opened either Choice card in the past 15 months, and 1 account per person (Wells Fargo terms, checked October 22, 2026).

Bilt has left the Wells Fargo rules entirely. Bilt’s current cards are issued by Column N.A. and serviced by Cardless (Bilt, checked October 22, 2026), so a Bilt card no longer counts toward any Wells Fargo clock. The rent-to-points mechanic is covered in our Bilt rewards guide.

Before you apply: score, prequalification, timing

  1. Check your score. Wells Fargo publishes no minimum. Experian calls 670 to 739 a good FICO range, and the bonus cards are built for good to excellent credit.
  2. Prequalify. Wells Fargo’s card site offers prequalification with no effect on your credit score (checked October 22, 2026).
  3. Count your clocks. 6 months since your last Wells Fargo bonus, 48 months since you opened the same card, and fewer than 5 new cards anywhere in 24 months.
  4. Watch your existing limits. Wells Fargo’s card terms say it can move credit from an existing card with no recent use to fund a new one, down to a $1,000 minimum (terms, checked October 22, 2026).
  5. Expect a short wait. If the decision is not instant, Wells Fargo mails it within 5 to 7 business days. Frequent Miler lists 800-967-9521 for status (February 24, 2026).

What counts, and the AU trap

For the published rules, what counts is simple: Wells Fargo bonuses you have earned and the open dates of your Wells Fargo cards. For the reported velocity screen, what counts is every new personal card on your report from any issuer in 24 months, plus authorized-user accounts that you cannot remove by phone.

Business cards that do not report to personal credit stay invisible to the velocity screen, the same pattern seen at most banks. If you keep a running list of open dates and AU additions, you will know your Wells Fargo number without guessing. The tracking spreadsheet is built for exactly this.

Which Wells Fargo cards to target

The lineup is small and that is its strength. The Active Cash is a flat 2 percent card with a reliable welcome bonus, the Autograph earns bonus points on restaurants, travel, transit, gas, streaming, and phone plans, and the Autograph Journey leans further into travel with airline and hotel transfer partners. Together they cover most everyday spend and give Wells Fargo points a redemption path beyond cash back.

Because the points became transferable, Wells Fargo moved from a cash-back sideshow to a program worth a slot. The Autograph Journey is usually the anchor for anyone chasing transferable value, with the Active Cash as the simplest first bonus. Hold the Bilt card alongside them for rent spending, since it sits outside the normal cadence.

Applying around Wells Fargo

Sequence Wells Fargo after Chase if you want both, since the reported screen and Chase 5/24 both punish a high recent-account count and Chase is the stricter of the two. Inside the Wells Fargo lineup, take one bonus, wait the 6 months, then take the next. The Autograph and Active Cash pair is a common starting sequence.

If you are near the reported 5/24 line, let a card or two age off your report before applying, and count authorized-user accounts in that math. The full cross-issuer order lives in the application order planner.

Common mistakes

Three things cost people money here. Opening two Wells Fargo cards inside the same 6-month window means the second bonus will not pay. Authorized-user accounts count toward the reported velocity screen and cannot be argued away on a reconsideration call, which surprises people coming from Chase. And measuring the 48-month same-card wait from the bonus date instead of the open date makes you wait longer than you need to.

Avoiding all three is mostly bookkeeping. Track open dates, bonus dates, and every authorized-user card in one place, and the Wells Fargo rules become easy to plan around.

What the points are worth

The rules only matter if the rewards justify the slot, and Wells Fargo points earned the upgrade when they became transferable. The Autograph Journey opens transfers to a roster of airline and hotel partners, which moves a Wells Fargo bonus from a fixed cash value to the kind of outsized redemption that transferable currencies allow. That is the same logic behind holding Chase or Amex points, covered in our Chase transfer partners guide.

For most people the practical play is simple. Earn the Active Cash bonus for guaranteed value, then earn the Autograph or Autograph Journey bonus six months later for the transfer access, and decide at renewal whether each annual fee earns its keep. Run that renewal math with the keep-or-cancel calculator rather than guessing, because a transfer-capable card can be worth holding even when a plain cash card is not. The point of learning the Wells Fargo rules is to collect those bonuses in an order that never wastes one to a 6-month overlap or a velocity decline you could have seen coming.

Rewards account changes in 2026. Wells Fargo changed how Rewards accounts work in 2026: since June, points on separate cards are no longer combined automatically, and since September 25, 2026 you can no longer give points to another Wells Fargo customer or set up automatic redemptions. You can still move points between your own cards, per Wells Fargo as quoted by Frequent Miler. Plan a 2-player Wells Fargo setup around that: each person redeems their own points.

FAQ

How often can I get a Wells Fargo bonus?

You can earn a welcome bonus on a Wells Fargo card once every 6 months across the lineup, meaning 6 months between any two Wells Fargo bonuses. To re-earn a bonus on the same card you must wait 48 months from the day you opened it.

Does Wells Fargo have a 5/24 rule?

It is widely reported but not published. Many applicants with more than 5 new personal cards from any issuer in 24 months are declined. Unlike Chase, authorized-user accounts appear to count and cannot be removed through reconsideration, so treat your real number as inclusive of AU cards.

When does the 48-month clock start?

On the day you open the Wells Fargo card, not the day the bonus posts. That is friendlier than issuers that start from the bonus date, because the clock begins running immediately.

Which Wells Fargo cards are exceptions?

The Signify Business Cash card sits outside the usual 6-month bonus cadence, and the Choice Privileges cards run their own 15 month rule. Bilt cards are no longer issued by Wells Fargo, so they do not touch its rules.

Do business cards count toward the reported 5/24 limit?

Business cards that do not report to personal credit do not appear to count, the same pattern seen at other banks. Personal cards and authorized-user accounts are what move the number.

What credit score do you need for a Wells Fargo card?

Wells Fargo publishes no minimum. The bonus cards are aimed at good to excellent credit, and Experian calls a 670 to 739 FICO Score good. Prequalify first to see offers without a hard inquiry.

How long does a Wells Fargo credit card decision take?

Many decisions are instant. If yours is not, Wells Fargo says it mails the decision within 5 to 7 business days.

Does a Bilt card count toward Wells Fargo’s rules?

No longer. Bilt’s current cards are issued by Column N.A. and serviced by Cardless, so they sit outside every Wells Fargo clock.
