How to read a head to head

Start at the bottom of the table, not the top. Annual fee against credits you will genuinely use is the number that decides most of these matchups, and it is the one people skip past on the way to comparing earn rates.

Earn rates matter less than they look. A card earning 4x on dining beats one earning 3x by one point per dollar, so on $6,000 of annual dining that gap is 6,000 points, often worth somewhere in the range of $60 to $120 depending on how you redeem. A $200 difference in annual fee is a larger and far more certain swing.

Treat credits at the value you will actually capture. A $300 travel credit that posts automatically on any airfare is close to $300. A $200 credit split into monthly instalments at one merchant is worth whatever fraction of it you will remember to use.

Protections are the quiet tiebreaker. Primary rental coverage and real trip delay protection are worth more than a category multiplier if you travel often enough to claim them once.
