Amex churning hub

American Express churning runs on 2 rules no other issuer copies. The once per lifetime rule limits each card’s welcome offer to 1 per person, and the pop-up jail hides offers from frequent bonus earners entirely. On the points side, Membership Rewards is the deepest transferable currency in the US: 16 airline and 4 hotel programs as of October 2026. Since October 2026, each new Amex card opens its own Membership Rewards account until you link it under Manage Connections.

FAQ

What is Amex pop-up jail?

The community name for a state where American Express shows the welcome-offer ineligibility pop-up on every application, including for cards you have never held. The lifetime rule blocks 1 card; pop-up jail blocks your whole profile. Full detail: Amex pop-up jail.

How long does Amex pop-up jail last?

Reports cluster around 60 to 120 days for people who change the underlying behavior: real spending on kept cards and no new cancellations. There is no published sentence length, and some report being stuck for a year when nothing changed. Full detail: Amex pop-up jail.

What does lifetime mean for Amex bonuses?

Amex has never defined it publicly, but years of applicant reports put it at roughly 7 years since you last earned the bonus on that card. After about 7 years the pop-up usually stops appearing and the welcome offer becomes available again. Full detail: the Amex once per lifetime rule.
