Capital One churning hub

Capital One’s churning rules come down to 3: about 1 new card every 6 months, hard pulls at all 3 credit bureaus, and a 48 month clock on Venture and Venture X bonuses. That makes it the strictest application gate of the major issuers. The miles side has become competitive with Chase and Amex: 18 airlines and 4 hotels as of June 2026, mostly at 1:1. Capital One also runs Discover now: new Discover cards open on its own systems, and existing Discover accounts finish converting in the first quarter, per its October 20, 2026 earnings call.

The rules: velocity, bureaus and the 48 month clock

Rule What it does Where it comes from
1 card per 6 months Spaces every new Capital One approval about 6 months apart Applicant reports; Capital One’s pre-approval page says you may be ineligible if you were recently approved or applied 2 or more times in 30 days
3 bureau pulls Each application usually pulls Experian, Equifax and TransUnion Applicant reports
Venture 48 months No Venture bonus if you received a Venture or Venture X bonus in the past 48 months Printed in the Venture offer terms
About 5 personal cards An informal ceiling on open personal cards Reported by The Points Guy, September 3, 2026
1 business charge card Primary on Venture X Business or Spark Cash Plus, not both Reported by Frequent Miler, February 24, 2026
Pre-approval A soft inquiry; accepting the offer triggers the hard pulls Capital One pre-approval page
Credit freezes A freeze or lock at any bureau makes you ineligible until you lift it Capital One pre-approval page

How Capital One compares

Capital One runs the strictest gate of the 6 issuers on this site. One new card every 6 months is a harder ceiling than Chase 5/24, because 5/24 lets you take 5 cards in any pattern across 24 months while Capital One spaces every approval regardless of how few you hold.

The bureau pulls are the other difference. Capital One pulls all 3 credit bureaus on a single application, where every other issuer on this site pulls one. That triples the inquiry cost of a single application. Capital One’s own guide puts 1 hard inquiry at 5 to 10 points on average, citing FICO (March 24, 2026), and myFICO says under 5 for most scores, so 3 at once can cost anywhere from under 15 points to 30. It matters most at Barclays, the issuer that weighs recent inquiries most heavily.

The 48 month clock covers the whole Venture family rather than a single card, so a Venture bonus blocks a VentureOne bonus. Citi’s rules run per card: 48 months on the AAdvantage cards and once per lifetime on each Strata card. Applicant reports point to an informal ceiling near 5 personal cards, with business cards outside that count.

FAQ

How many Capital One cards can you have?

Capital One says there is no official limit, but applicant reports have long pointed to an informal ceiling of about 5 personal cards, with older subprime-era cards sometimes ignored. Business cards sit outside the personal count. Full detail: Capital One application rules.

Does Capital One really pull all 3 credit bureaus?

Yes. Most applications generate hard inquiries at Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. One application costs 3 inquiries, the steepest inquiry price among major issuers. Full detail: Capital One application rules.

Can I get approved for 2 Capital One cards in 6 months?

The long-standing rule is 1 approval per 6 months, but 2024 through 2026 reports include approvals faster than that, especially across the personal and business divide. Treat 1 per 6 months as the planning assumption and anything faster as luck. Full detail: Capital One application rules.

What are Capital One’s velocity rules?

About 1 new Capital One card every 6 months, by applicant reports. Capital One’s pre-approval page says you may be ineligible if you were recently approved for one of its cards or applied 2 or more times in the past 30 days.

Does Capital One have a 5/24 rule?

No. Capital One does not count other banks’ new cards the way Chase does. Its limits sit on its own approvals: about 1 every 6 months, and roughly 5 open personal cards.

Can I check Capital One approval odds without a hard pull?

Yes. Capital One’s pre-approval check is a soft inquiry with no effect on your scores. Accepting an offer and applying triggers the hard pulls.
