How to Get Hilton Status With a Credit Card

By John Bourscheid · Updated October 2026 · 4 min read
Quick answer

Two Hilton cards hand you status outright: the Aspire at $550 gives Diamond, the Surpass at $150 gives Gold. The no-fee card gives Silver, and spending your way up is possible at $20,000 for Gold and $40,000 for Diamond in a calendar year. One change matters for 2026: the new Diamond Reserve tier cannot be reached with a credit card at all. Figures are as of 2026; confirm current terms at American Express and Hilton.

What each card confers

Card Annual fee Status granted Hilton earn rate
Hilton Honors Aspire $550 Diamond, automatic 14x
Hilton Honors Surpass $150 Gold, automatic 12x
Hilton Honors $0 Silver, automatic 7x

Status is granted for as long as you hold the card, with no nights required. That is the whole appeal: Hilton is the easiest major program to hold mid-tier and top-tier status in without ever chasing a night count.

Spending your way up

The lower cards let you buy an upgrade with spend rather than fee. Put $20,000 on the no-fee Hilton card in a calendar year and you move to Gold through the end of the following year. Reach $40,000 and you move to Diamond on the same terms.

The math rarely favours this. $40,000 of spend on a 7x hotel card to reach Diamond means forgoing whatever a 2x flat-rate card would have earned on that same $40,000, and the Aspire simply hands you Diamond for $550. Spend thresholds make sense only if the spending is already going on that card for another reason.

What the tiers actually get you

Gold is the tier most people should care about, because it carries free breakfast or a food and beverage credit at most brands, room upgrades when available, and the fifth night free on award stays. Diamond adds executive lounge access, better upgrade priority, and a higher points bonus.

Silver is thin on its own, with the notable exception that it gives you the fifth night free, which is the single most valuable mechanic in Hilton redemptions. A no-fee card that confers Silver is therefore doing real work.

The 2026 change worth knowing

Hilton is adding a tier above Diamond called Diamond Reserve, and it is deliberately unreachable by credit card. It requires 80 nights and $18,000 of hotel spend in a year, both, through actual stays. Card-granted Diamond does not count toward it.

For most readers that changes nothing, since the benefits people care about sit at Gold and Diamond. It does mean the ceiling on card-granted status is now one tier lower than it used to be, and anyone who assumed a card could carry them to the top of the program should reset that expectation. Confirm the current requirements at Hilton, since the tier is new.

2 more changes for 2027, per the Hilton Honors terms. Rollover nights are gone: nights earned in 2026 do not carry into 2027. And Diamond extensions from 2027 require 3 total years at Diamond plus at least 250 lifetime nights or $50,000 of lifetime eligible spend (the 2026 version used 250 nights or 500,000 base points). Lifetime Diamond takes 10 years at Diamond plus 1,000 nights or $200,000 of lifetime eligible spend. Card-granted Diamond from the Aspire is unaffected, since it lasts as long as you hold the card.

Which card to hold

Take the Surpass if you stay at Hilton a few times a year and want breakfast and the fifth night free without a large fee. Take the Aspire if you stay often enough to use the annual free night and the lounge access, since the free night alone can cover most of the $550 at a Conrad or Waldorf. Take the no-fee card if you rarely stay but want Silver so the fifth night free is available when you do.
