Turkish Miles&Smiles sweet spots after the 2025 reset

By John Bourscheid · Updated September 2026 · 7 min read
Quick answer

The December 2025 devaluation ended the flat-price era: United domestic economy now runs 15,000 miles one-way, business 22,500, and Hawaii business roughly 40,000, in line with other programs. The case for the program now rests on what else it offers. Compare the feeds in the transfer partner chart.

Turkish Miles&Smiles spent years as the best domestic sweet spot in the hobby: a flat, absurdly cheap price for United flights across the US and to Hawaii. A December 2025 devaluation ended that era. This guide is the honest current picture: what changed, what still works, and the friction you have to accept to use the program at all.

Everything below was checked in June 2026, right after the devaluation settled. Because Turkish has repriced before with little notice, treat the numbers as current rather than permanent. The transfer partner finder shows which of your points reach Turkish.

What changed in December 2025

The headline devaluation hit exactly the awards Turkish was famous for. United domestic economy rose from about 10,000 miles flat to 15,000 one-way, business to 22,500, and Hawaii business to roughly 40,000. The single best reason most Americans collected Turkish miles, near-free domestic and Hawaii flights, got materially more expensive overnight.

The December 2025 devaluation reset the famous domestic sweet spot.

The increases are not catastrophic in absolute terms, but they erased the gap that made Turkish special. At 15,000 miles a domestic one-way is now in line with other programs rather than a steal, so the case for the program rests on what else it offers.

Who can reach Turkish miles

Funding Turkish is the first hurdle. Only Citi ThankYou, Capital One, and Bilt transfer at 1:1, with Marriott at 3:1. Amex and Chase, the two currencies most US churners hold the most of, do not transfer to Turkish at all. If your points live with Amex or Chase, Turkish is effectively out of reach without earning elsewhere.

That narrow transfer footprint is a real limiter and worth knowing before you build a plan around Turkish. For many readers the program is only practical if they already collect Citi, Capital One, or Bilt.

The domestic award now

Post-devaluation, United domestic economy is 15,000 miles one-way and business 22,500, with Hawaii business about 40,000. Those are usable but no longer category-leading. Against a cash fare on an expensive short route they can still make sense, but they no longer beat the fixed and dynamic charts of other programs by the wide margin they once did.

If you specifically want United domestic awards, compare the Turkish price against booking United directly or through another Star Alliance program before assuming Turkish wins, because often it no longer does.

What still works

The program’s remaining strength is Turkish Airlines’ own network. Nonstops from the US to Istanbul and onward across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia in Turkish business class can still price reasonably, and Istanbul is a genuinely useful connecting hub. Select Star Alliance partner awards also retain value where the new pricing still undercuts alternatives.

Turkish is now a Turkish-Airlines program with some Star Alliance upside. The domestic-United era is over. Judged on what it is today, it is fine and no longer exceptional.

Surcharges

One thing that survived is Turkish’s relatively light surcharge policy on many Star Alliance partner awards, where the cash co-pay stays modest. That keeps the all-in cost reasonable on partner redemptions, though you should always confirm the fees for your exact routing before transferring, since they vary by carrier.

Low fees are not unique to Turkish, though. Aeroplan and Avianca LifeMiles also keep surcharges low, often with easier booking, which is why the comparison below matters.

The friction, honestly

Turkish is notorious for being hard to use. Many bookings require a phone call, accounts can be frozen pending manual identity verification, and the website and award search are unreliable enough that experienced users cross-check with third-party tools. None of this is a dealbreaker, but it is real, and it is why the program rewards patience over spontaneity.

The practical rule is to never transfer miles in until you have confirmed, ideally by phone, that the space you found can actually be ticketed. Speculative transfers into a program this finicky are how points get stuck.

Earning Turkish miles

Build a balance only when you have a specific award in mind, transferring from Citi, Capital One, or Bilt at the moment you are ready to book. Because Amex and Chase are out, there is little reason to stockpile Turkish miles speculatively, and the devaluation risk argues against holding a large balance anyway.

If you collect the eligible currencies, our Citi and Capital One transfer guides cover moving points cleanly.

How to book

Find the space first, ideally confirming by phone that it can be ticketed, then transfer the exact miles, then book. Expect to call for anything beyond the simplest online award, and keep your reserve in the flexible currency until the ticket is issued.

Give yourself a buffer of days, not hours, around a Turkish booking. The combination of slow transfers and a balky system means rushed redemptions go wrong.

Compare before you commit

Before transferring to Turkish, price the same trip through Aeroplan and Avios, both easier to use and reachable from more currencies. Turkish should win on price or routing for the specific award, not by default, because the booking friction is a real cost.

Is it worth it

After December 2025, Turkish is a situational program. It still has uses for Turkish-metal premium cabins and a few partner awards, and its surcharges stay low, but the cheap domestic era that made it famous is gone, the transfer footprint is narrow, and the booking experience is hard. Reach for it when it clearly wins a specific comparison, and lean on easier programs the rest of the time.

If you do not already collect Citi, Capital One, or Bilt, you can comfortably skip Turkish and lose very little. If you do, keep it in your back pocket for the routes where it still shines.

FAQ

Is Turkish Miles&Smiles still a good sweet spot?

Less than it was. A December 2025 devaluation raised the famous United domestic awards from about 10,000 miles flat to 15,000 in economy and 22,500 in business one-way, and pushed Hawaii business to about 40,000. The program still has uses, but the cheap-domestic era is over.

Which cards transfer to Turkish Miles&Smiles?

As of June 2026, Citi ThankYou, Capital One, and Bilt transfer at 1:1, and Marriott transfers at 3:1. Amex and Chase do not transfer to Turkish, which limits who can easily fund it.

Does Turkish charge fuel surcharges?

On many Star Alliance partner awards Turkish passes little or no carrier surcharge, which is part of its remaining appeal. Always confirm the cash co-pay for your specific routing before transferring.

Why is Turkish considered hard to use?

Bookings often require a phone call, accounts can need manual verification, and the website and award search are unreliable. Budget extra time and patience, and do not transfer miles until you have confirmed the space can actually be ticketed.

What is still worth booking with Turkish miles?

Turkish’s own nonstops from the US to Istanbul and onward in business class, and select Star Alliance partner awards where the post-devaluation price still beats alternatives. Compare against Aeroplan and Avianca LifeMiles before committing.
